Major Education Reform Announced
The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to introduce the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum in government schools. This reform will commence from the next academic session, with 100 senior secondary schools across the state being affiliated to the CBSE board in the first phase. The decision was announced by an official spokesman on Saturday.
Aims of the Initiative
The primary goal is to promote healthy competition between schools affiliated with the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education and the newly affiliated CBSE schools. This is expected to encourage both students and teachers to strive for improved performance.
The move is designed to strengthen the academic competitiveness of Himachali students and better equip them to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The CBSE curriculum is nationally benchmarked and widely recognised, particularly in relation to national-level competitive examinations.
Ensuring Accessibility and Quality
To ensure wide access to quality education under the CBSE system at an affordable cost, the government plans to open at least one CBSE school in every Assembly constituency.
These new CBSE-affiliated government schools will function as day-boarding institutions. They will focus on the all-round development of students, placing emphasis on academics alongside nutrition, sports, arts, skilling, remedial teaching, counselling, career guidance, mentoring, and coaching. Additional posts will be created where necessary to support these enhanced initiatives.
Staffing and Incentives
To implement this educational reform, a separate sub-cadre will be created for the new CBSE schools. Serving teachers will be given the option to join this CBSE sub-cadre.
Staff selection (including principals, teachers, and non-teaching staff) will be carried out on a merit basis, considering factors like academic excellence and co-curricular involvement. A performance-based incentive scheme, offering both monetary and non-monetary rewards, will be introduced to motivate the staff.
